Are there reasons for using EndNote over RefWorks, or vice versa?
While both EndNote and RefWorks are freely accessible through the Library, and provide similar features in terms of managing reference citations, the Library recommends using RefWorks for the following reasons:
- We provide more troubleshooting and instructional support for RefWorks, including our RefWorks Library Guide and RefWorks FAQs. You can also register to attend the RefWorks Power Hour, a weekly group session that reviews how to use the research management tool. To register for an upcoming session, visit the Library Events Calendar. We also suggest watching our recorded workshop Introduction to RefWorks.
- You will retain your personal RefWorks account beyond graduation from the university. However, you will not have access to EndNote beyond graduation from the university. You would need to purchase a desktop version of EndNote and transfer your citations in order to continue using that product.
*As part of our commitment to providing reliable, accessible, and forward-looking research tools, the NU Library will be transitioning away from RefWorks at the end of this year (12/31/2025). We’re excited to support our community in making the move to Zotero, a powerful, user-friendly citation manager that’s widely used across academic institutions and ensures continued access after graduation: https://resources.nu.edu/zotero We will be offering additional webinars in the coming weeks for those of you who would like to export your files from Refworks to Zotero. If you decide Zotero isn't for you, we'll provide information on other citation management options. We’re here to help you make the most of your research tools—now and in the future!
