RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM) for Microsoft Word or RefWorks for Google Docs is not accepting my university password. Why can't I login?

RefWorks Citation Manager for Microsoft Word and RefWorks for Google Docs are plugins that let you run a simplified version of RefWorks in these word processing tools. You can add inline citations and create reference lists in Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

Currently, RefWorks Citation Manager and RefWorks for Google Docs require that you create an alternate password for access that is separate from your university password. Your username is still your school email address.

Choosing an alternate password for your account will allow you to login to RefWorks for Google Docs and RefWorks Citation Manager for Microsoft Word using your school email and this alternate password. Currently, these integrations do not sync with the institutional sign-in page.

To set up an alternate password for your RefWorks account, use the following steps:

1. Click on your name in the top right corner in your RefWorks online dashboard and go to Settings.

Access your personal settings in RefWorks

2. Scroll to the Alternate Password section and click on Set alternate password.

Set alternate password in RefWorks settings

3. Create an alternate password that is at least 6 characters for your RefWorks account and click on Save.

*As part of our commitment to providing reliable, accessible, and forward-looking research tools, the NU Library will be transitioning away from RefWorks at the end of this year (12/31/2025). We’re excited to support our community in making the move to Zotero, a powerful, user-friendly citation manager that’s widely used across academic institutions and ensures continued access after graduation: https://resources.nu.edu/zotero We will be offering additional webinars in the coming weeks for those of you who would like to export your files from Refworks to Zotero. If you decide Zotero isn't for you, we'll provide information on other citation management options. We’re here to help you make the most of your research tools—now and in the future!
