How can I search for articles by research method?
If you're trying to find studies that used specific research methods, try these two tips:
Add the name of the research method to your search box (and try using the Field option).
Try typing the name of the method into your search box. Here's an example:
Databases like EBSCO, ProQuest, JSTOR, or NavigatorSearch allow you to search for a word in article titles, abstracts, or subject term lists, which increases the likelihood that your results will be relevant. Here's how to do this:
- In EBSCO, ProQuest, JSTOR, or NavigatorSearch, click on the Advanced Search link.
- Use the drop-down menus next to your search boxes to select the area you want to search, such as the abstract or subject terms. Here's an example from EBSCO:
The name of the method you're searching for should appear in the abstract of each article in your results list.
Use the Methodology filter (if there's one available).
Some databases have a Methodology filter. You can use this to filter out everything except studies that use the research method you want.
For example, in EBSCO's APA PsycTests, APA PsycBooks, APA PsycInfo, and APA PsycArticles
- Input the search terms for your topic.
- Before searching, scroll down to the Methodology section. This will open a menu where you can select the method type you're looking for:
Still can't find an article using the method you want?
Keep in mind that there may not have been many research studies on your topic that used your preferred method. This is especially true if your topic and keywords are very specific (focused on a certain location, a small population, etc.). Consider whether you can adjust your keywords to find studies similar to your topic (for example: elementary instead of first grade, California instead of San Francisco).
